Ex-NBA player Adreian Payne shot, killed in Orlando


Officials in Orange County have confirmed that basketball star Adreian Payne died early Monday morning in Orlando. Deputies were called to the 2500 block of Egret Shores Drive around 1:30 a.m.A man later identified as 31-year-old Payne was discovered suffering from gunshot wounds and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.The suspect was identified as 29-year-old Lawrence Dority.Officials say Dority stayed at the scene and was transported to OCSO headquarters where he was interviewed by homicide detectives. He has been arrested for first-degree murder and lodged in the Orange County Jail. Sports Illustrated reports Payne rose to prominence while at Michigan State, where he was named to the All-Big Ten team. He was selected as the No. 15 pick in the 2014 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks and spent four seasons in the league, playing with Atlanta, Minnesota and the Orlando Magic. The Detroit Free Press reports Payne went overseas in 2018, where he played as a member of Panathinaikos, a Greek League Basketball club.
